Mercury Retrograde: Our Survival Guide
Mercury Retrograde happens 3-4 times per year every year and many pop-culture astrologers complain about the regular planetary movement as a nuisance. In reality, this pattern is a necessary part of nature that balances the energy of our planets’ flow through space and with a few tips and tricks, we can help you get through with minimal hiccups in your daily life.
THE BASICS: Mercury is the planet of communication, travel, technology, as well as thinking and mental processes. Mercury rules the signs of Virgo and Gemini, which are both mutable signs.
MERCURY IN MOTION: At its finest, Mercurial energy looks like a lot of ideas, communication, forward-moving, almost computer-like mental processing energy. Mercury moves quickly and decisively, after going through a thorough pro-con process to make the very best decision for moving forward.
MERCURY RETROGRADING: With Mercury in Retrograde (Rx for short), all of these areas of life like technology, travel, and communication are slowed and mirrored in order for us to reflect and recalibrate these things. Perhaps a stuck email in the outbox prevents a misstep in career. More time waiting for a delayed train gives the opportunity to strike up conversation with a stranger, who might be a soulmate.
Delays, glitches, and bugs in travel, technology, and communication point all of us to reflect and take an inventory on our patterns and daily life and make adjustments where it is needed.
As Mercury is the planet of communication, it’s also common for exes (and Wishy Washys) to reach back out and revisit relationships, checking in or making sure they made the right decision to end things. While sometimes, this reach-out is sincere, it’s important to temper any sudden decisions or major relationship investments until Mercury is direct again.
HOW TO COPE: Mercury Rx lasts for approximately 3 weeks and we begin to feel its effects during the “pre-shadow period” up to 2 weeks before it begins, and possibly through the “post-shadow period” 2 weeks after retrograde ends. We recommend taking extra care and caution in the following ways to prevent the fewest possible “speed bumps” in your daily life while Mercury is in retrograde.
Plan extra travel time. Whether an international vacation, or your daily commute, we recommend allowing extra travel time as well as double-checking all travel documents, tickets, and finances.
Avoid signing contracts or making major purchases during this time. If you absolutely must sign a contract or make a major purchase, review the documents and terms very carefully and take time to think about your purchase. Perhaps even take a waiting period of 48 hours to see if any hiccups arise. Do not impulse-buy or make sudden moves without thinking them over.
Proofread all important communications. Emailing your boss? Maybe scan it an extra time for embarrassing typos or send to a friend first to give it a once-over to make sure your tone reads as friendly, not flirty or professional, not grumpy.
Take a deep breath. Computer on the fritz? Phone apps crashing? Part of this time period is “unplugging” and slowing down. Use the downtime to take a breath and “un-frazzle” yourself.
DON’T TEXT YOUR EX!!!!! While we’d never say never… sometimes Mercury Retrograde creates temptation to text that ex who we KNOW is never a good idea. Phone a friend, watch a movie, do anything but send that “U up?” text. Respect and love yourself enough to know it’ll pass when Mercury goes direct again.
SPELL ADVICE: If you would like to use spellwork to support yourself through Mercury Retrograde, we recommend the following spells to get you through the energy change: Cleanses, Protection Spells, Fast Luck Spells, and Communication/ Reconciliation with an Ex… why not use that impulse?
